Family Outside

By Mary Kathryn Poole, MPH | Program Director, Let’s Move Pittsburgh

There’s no reason to be bored this July with the number of opportunities to be active together as a family! From playing in the streets to attending a dance party, Pittsburgh is making it easy and fun to practice 5-2-1-0 every day.

Y on the Fly. This summer, the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is bringing the YMCA to you with its “Y on the Fly” mobile van. This pop up van makes 1.5 hour stops at numerous locations across the county and provides fun, free games and healthy snacks for kids. Follow the Y on the Fly on Twitter and Facebook to see where it will stop next. You can also find information on the Live Well Allegheny events calendar

One WHIRL Yoga Fest + Healthy Lifestyle Expo. Join yogis of all levels on Saturday, July 23 at Point State Park for WHIRL’s fifth annual yoga festival. Take classes from your favorite yoga studios or learn about healthy lifestyle products from a variety of vendors. Click here to read more about the event.

UPMC Health Plan’s Healthy Family Day. Visit the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on Saturday, July 30 to learn about five tips to raising a healthy family. Participate in arts and craft activities, a family dance party and more! Let’s Move Pittsburgh will be there to teach you how to plant and care for your very own lettuce plant. Visit the event page to learn more.

Open Streets Pittsburgh. For the third time this summer, families can bike, walk, run, skate or stroll through vacant city streets on Sunday, July 31. Exercises classes and demos will also take place along the route. Check the Open Streets website to see the schedule and learn more.

Kids Triathlon. Habitat for Humanity is hosting its annual Kids Triathlon. The first race takes place on Saturday, July 23 in South Park, and the second event is on Saturday, August 6 in North Park. More details can be found here.

Family Fitness. Let’s Move Pittsburgh is teaming up with the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh to offer a series of free family fitness classes. The series will kick off with an all levels yoga class on the Phipps’ front lawn on Sunday, August 21 at 9 am. RSVP is required at letsmovepittsburgh.org.

Emerald View Park. Take a hike in Pittsburgh’s newest park and experience the view from Mt. Washington from a wooded trail. Emerald View Park offers 10 miles of trails featuring loops that range from one to four miles. Check out the map at this website to find a trailhead near you.

This article is an effort of Let’s Move Pittsburgh’s 5-2-1-0 initiative to help Pittsburgh’s youth practice 5-2-1-0 — 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables, hours or less of recreational screen time, hour or more of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks and more water — every day!
